Lithophanes & Memorials Lithophanes are a unique gift idea and offer a wonderful way to celibrate the life of a loved one. Lithophanes are an unusual and interesting art form that dates to the early 19th century. Chinese potters employed the process to trace floral designs in the delicate walls of eggshell thin porcelain vases. Baron Paul de Bourguignon, of Rubelles France, is generally credited with copyrighting the processes of Lithopanes in France in 1827. Porcelain was the favored raw material used in the processes.
